Israel del Rio is an executive and technologist with over 30 years of practical experience in global IT and digital transformations for both, large international companies, and well-funded start-ups. He has led the delivery of innovative solutions in close collaboration with business stakeholders, resulting in several million dollars capital and expense reductions. As CIO and CTO, he has led large geographically distributed IT teams, and defined enterprise strategies, system architecture, IT governance, led large outsourcing deals, and implemented various business solutions via Agile and Waterfall methodologies.
Israel is a well-known IT leader in the hospitality industry and is driven by significant and measurable results. In addition to IT Leadership and Management, Technology Transformation and IT Strategy & Architecture, his knowledge areas include Social Media and Cloud/XaaS, Cognitive and Data Science, B2C/B2B eCommerce, CRM/BI, Software Development, SOA, and Performance Management.
Prior to WGroup, Israel was SVP & CIO at Revel Entertainment LLC. He planned and implemented, and operated “soup-to-nuts” IT infrastructure for the $2.4B start-up resort/casino with over sixty critical systems in record time and on budget. The project involved building the IT organization from scratch. He was responsible for Revel's information technology and for the implementation and operation of all enterprise technology systems and solutions: business intelligence, hospitality systems, casino systems, back-of-the-house software, network security, communication systems, and network and systems infrastructure in strict compliance with stringent gaming regulations. Systems included a brand new state of the art data center with full Processor and Data virtualization, plus industry-first virtual IP network with over three thousand routers, and innovative guestroom technology. Revel’s guestroom technology was consistently ranked first amongst all hotel services in guest satisfaction surveys.
As SVP & CTO at IHG - InterContinental Hotels Group, Israel provided thought leadership in ensuring the organization had a competitive CRM system and operating model supporting over 30 million guests, with a selective outsourcing and off-shoring model. He established strong relationships with key business stakeholders ensuring consistent collaboration, information flow, system requirements, and on-time, on-budget delivery. As senior advisor for Mexico’s Grupo Posadas, he developed key strategic, architectural and business recommendations to the Global Technology Team – overseeing evaluation, selection, development, implementation, and support of eCommerce and Loyalty systems that enabled significant ROI.
As SVP Technology Solutions at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., Israel served as the key strategist, designer and implementer for all enterprise-level guest value chain systems. He conceived, architected, and delivered state-of-the-art multi-year technology transformation program providing innovative applications for distribution channels ( GDS, Web, IDS, Call Centers), and core hotel and backend systems (Property Search, Shopping (Galaxy/LightSpeed), Rates, & Availability), Reservations, using SOA. He was responsible for the development and operations of award-winning global eCommerce systems, including sheraton.com, westin.com, fourpoints.com, and others. He developed a cohesive Global IT strategy and performed as Chief Architect to support strategic business imperatives, including migration of legacy CRS systems into modern strategic technologies providing operating savings in excess of $10M per year.
As the VP of Architecture & Engineering at Sabre, Israel spearheaded engineering incubation activities for emerging technology applications. He defined and introduced new open technology solutions for high-performance, high transaction environments. He created a strategic architecture model for roadmap to high transaction service oriented technology and defined global TCP/IP solutions for over 40,000 travel agencies worldwide.
Israel is fluent in English, and Spanish. He has won multiple awards throughout his career, including 2007 Computerworld Premier 100 IT Leader, InfoWorld’s 100 Innovative Solutions Award in 2002, Division Award for Galileo, Award of Merit for United Airlines, and IBM Marketing Excellence Award. He engineered and developed the new infrastructure for O’Hare Airport Terminal 1, including over 1,000 of the first-ever diskless workstations connected via complex local area networks. He is the author of “Technology Transformation—Trials, Techniques & Tribulations” book.
Israel holds a BS in Electronics & Communications Engineering from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, México.
